7-Day Peru Itinerary Focused on Gradual Altitude Acclimation

Peru is a country of incredible high-altitude landscapes and rich history. Because of the significant elevation changes and winding roads, it’s important to plan your trip carefully to limit altitude sickness. Rather than staying in Cusco upon arrival, you'll immediately descend to the Sacred Valley to start your journey at a lower elevation. This slow and steady approach allows your body to acclimate comfortably as you travel toward Machu Picchu and, if you choose, higher elevations like Rainbow Mountain. By grouping nearby destinations and managing elevation changes thoughtfully, this itinerary helps you enjoy Peru’s top sights.

Day 1: Arrival in Lima (Evening at the Airport)

Start your journey in Lima with a smooth landing at Jorge Chávez International Airport. If your international flight lands at night, skip the drive into the city and stay at an airport hotel. The Wyndham Costa del Sol, located directly across from the terminal, is ideal for a quick, comfortable overnight.

  • Evening

    • Arrive at Lima’s Jorge Chávez International Airport

    • Walk across to Wyndham Costa del Sol Lima Airport Hotel

    • Check in and rest after your flight

Day 2: Starting in the Sacred Valley - From Lima to Ollantaytambo

Start your day with an early flight to Cusco. Rather than staying there, head directly to Ollantaytambo or Urubamba in the Sacred Valley. Both towns are at lower elevations, providing a gentler way to begin acclimating to the Andes and helping your body adjust more comfortably before ascending to higher altitudes.

  • Morning

    • Flight from Lima to Cusco

    • Private transfer to Ollantaytambo

  • Late Morning

    • Check into your hotel if available or drop off your bags

    • Walk around the peaceful town

  • Afternoon/Evening

    • Lunch/Dinner in Ollantaytambo

    • Visit Ollantaytambo Archaeological Site — an impressive Inca fortress and former military stronghold known for its massive terraces, stone walls, and well-preserved ruins that offer a glimpse into ancient Andean culture

Day 3: Machu Picchu - The Inca Wonder

Day 3 centers around the unforgettable visit to Machu Picchu, one of the world’s most breathtaking archaeological treasures. For those without time to trek the Inca Trail, the scenic train ride to Aguas Calientes offers stunning views of the Andes and the Urubamba River, setting the stage for your arrival at the ancient citadel. Get your tickets as early as January 1st of the year you plan to go and always pick Circuit 2 for the best views.

  • Early Morning

    • Breakfast at the hotel

    • Take the PeruRail Vistadome train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes (sit on the left side for the best views); an 8 AM or earlier departure is recommended.

  • Mid-Morning

    • Arrive in Aguas Calientes, the gateway town at the base of Machu Picchu.

    • Buy your Machu Picchu bus tickets and line up at least 30 minutes before your scheduled bus departure. Your bus ticket should be for the departure time that is 30 minutes before your Machu Picchu admission ticket.

    • Enter Machu Picchu up to 1 hour before your scheduled admission time (passport required). For example, if your ticket is for 11:00 AM, you can enter anytime between 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM.

  • Afternoon

    • Tour Machu Picchu

    • Enjoy lunch at the Sanctuary Lodge, a Belmond Hotel situated just outside the entrance to Machu Picchu.

    • Take the bus back to Aguas Calientes and enjoy some time exploring the town before your train departs.

  • Late Afternoon / Evening

    • Return by train to Ollantaytambo

    • Dinner and overnight at hotel

Day 4: Sacred Valley Ruins

This day offers a deeper look into the Sacred Valley’s rich landscape and Inca ingenuity. From the salt terraces of Maras to the circular agricultural terraces of Moray, you’ll see how the Incas skillfully adapted to their environment. The day concludes with a scenic visit to the Pisac ruins, perched high above the valley. Instead of joining a group tour—which typically returns to its starting point—opt for a private car transfer. It’s a more flexible way to explore and makes the most of your journey en route to Cusco.

  • Morning

  • Afternoon

    • Lunch in Urubamba

    • Drive to Pisac to visit ruins and explore the market

  • Evening

    • Transfer to Cusco

    • Check into your hotel and dinner in the city

Day 5: Discover Cusco

Today is your chance to explore Cusco at a more relaxed pace. Once the capital of the Inca Empire, Cusco blends ancient stonework with colonial charm. Start with the impressive ruins just outside the city, including Sacsayhuamán, before diving into the cultural heart of Cusco. From the ornate Qorikancha temple to the artisan stalls of San Blas, the city offers a rich mix of history, craftsmanship, and character.

  • Morning

  • Afternoon

    • Visit Qorikancha (Temple of the Sun) and Plaza de Armas within Cusco

    • Explore the San Blas district and shop for handmade crafts

  • Evening

    • Dinner in the city

Day 6: Rainbow Mountain and Red Valley - High Altitude Adventure

If you’re ready for it, Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) is one of Peru’s most striking natural wonders, famous for its vivid, mineral-rich stripes. Sitting at over 17,000 feet (5,200 meters), it's nearly as high as Everest Base Camp—so the altitude is serious. Thankfully, by this point in your trip, your body should be better acclimated. After a scenic three-hour drive, you’ll hike through sweeping highland landscapes dotted with alpacas and snowcapped peaks. Reaching the summit rewards you with surreal, multicolored ridges and some of the most breathtaking views in the Andes. A hidden gem is the nearby Red Valley, which adds a dramatic, less-crowded bonus for those with a bit more energy.

  • Very Early Morning

    • Depart Cusco around 4:00 AM for the 3-hour drive with your tour guide

  • Morning

    • Hike to the summit of Rainbow Mountain, or choose to ride horseback one way for an additional cost of 50 soles.

    • Enjoy panoramic views of the colorful striped mountain and surrounding Andean peaks

    • Optional: Extend the hike through Red Valley, known for its striking crimson landscapes and quieter trails. This will cost an extra 30 soles.

  • Afternoon

    • Descend to the trailhead and begin the return drive

    • Have lunch at a local restaurant en route back to Cusco

  • Evening

    • Arrive in Cusco

    • Rest and enjoy dinner in the city

Day 7: Lima - Coastal Culture & Colonial Landmarks

Day 7 offers a gentle transition back to Peru’s bustling capital. Flying from Cusco to Lima provides a chance to unwind and prepare for your journey home. In Lima, explore the vibrant Barranco district with its colorful streets, art galleries, and seaside views, then head to nearby Miraflores to stroll its beautiful parks and coastal cliffs. This final day blends culture and relaxation, giving you time to savor Peru’s coastal charm before your departure.

  • Morning

    • After the flight to Lima, transfer to Miraflores and drop off luggage at your hotel

    • Head to the Historic Center

    • Visit Plaza Mayor, Basilica Cathedral, and San Francisco Monastery

  • Afternoon/Evening

    • Lunch or dinner at Central, one of the world’s best restaurants

    • Try paragliding with a certified tandem pilot at Costa Verde beach in the San Miguel district

Final Thoughts

  • This 7-day Peru itinerary is designed not just for sightseeing—but for smart, gradual acclimation to the country’s dramatic elevations. Along the way, you'll experience the full spectrum of Peru’s beauty: vibrant cities, ancient ruins, sweeping mountain landscapes, and world-renowned cuisine. Whether it’s your first trip to South America or a long-awaited bucket list journey, this itinerary offers a thoughtful, well-paced way to explore one of the world’s most breathtaking destinations.
